Presence, The Play
“More like a fantastically acted film than words on a page…”
– Amy Lignor, Feathered Quill

Presence, the Play, speaks to the primacy of personal presence over mediated presence, detached from being.
The novel’s protagonist, a playwright, is thrust into a comatose world, in which he grasps to discern image from self. Along the way, he enters a Dantean-inspired netherworld, where Lucifer, the ultimate antagonist, appears on a stage of luminous ice to declare the modern age of media ecology has swept away the dated notion of presence.
Thus, is presence “utterly passé,” and do pixels gain prominence over presence?

“I saw, today, the corpse being borne to Kirk of one who, but last Monday, was at work.”
– Geoffrey Chaucer, The Canterbury Tales “The Miller’s Tale”

“There is no sorrow greater than, in times of misery, to hold at heart the memory of happiness.”
– Dante Alighieri, Inferno, Canto 5

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore—
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door—
“Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door—
Only this and nothing more.”
